PPF vs Ceramic Coating: Which Does Your Car Need?
Short answer: they do different jobs. Paint protection film (PPF) is a physical layer that takes the hit from a rock so your paint does not. A ceramic coating is a thin, slick layer that keeps the paint glossy and makes it easier to clean. One stops chips. The other stops grime from sticking. Here is how to tell which one your car needs, what each costs at our Loveland shop, and what neither of them will do.
The short version
| Question | Paint protection film | Ceramic coating |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A clear polyurethane film, 7 to 10 mil thick, applied over the paint | A liquid polymer that bonds with the paint and forms a thin protective layer |
| Rock chips and gravel | Yes. This is its job | No |
| Light swirls and wash scratches | Yes. The film we install heals minor swirls and scratches with heat | Limited. It is too thin to take a real scratch |
| UV, bugs, bird droppings, road grime | Yes, on the panels it covers | Yes, on everything it covers |
| Water beading and easier washing | Not its main job | Yes. This is its job |
| Hail dents and door dings | No | No |
| Where it goes | The panels that take the hits, or the whole vehicle | Usually the whole vehicle |
| Starting price at KCL | $550 to $5,000, by package | From $699, by vehicle size |
What paint protection film does
Paint protection film, also called PPF or clear bra, is a clear polyurethane film 7 to 10 mil thick. It goes over the painted panel and takes the abuse from gravel, sand, bug acid and bird droppings so the paint under it does not. Installed well, it is hard to see.
The film we install is XPEL Ultimate Plus. It is computer-cut for your vehicle and installed by hand in our Loveland shop, where Koby is our XPEL Certified and Trained Installer. It heals minor swirls and scratches with heat, and the film carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty. How you care for it decides whether it gets there.
What film does not do
- It is not armor. A large enough rock at highway speed can still mark the film or the paint under it.
- It does not stop dents. More on that below.
- Partial coverage shows an edge. With wrapped edges and full coverage the film disappears. A partial hood will show a line where the film ends.
- Repainted panels are a risk at removal. Film comes off factory paint cleanly with the right equipment. A repainted panel can lose paint when the film is taken off.
Coverage and starting prices are on our paint protection film page.
What a ceramic coating does
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds with your paint and forms a durable layer over it. UV, road grime, brake dust, bug splatter and bird droppings meet the coating and not your clear coat. Water beads and rolls off, dirt has a harder time sticking, and washing the vehicle gets faster. It lasts years, where wax lasts weeks.
A coating seals in whatever finish is under it. That is why we correct the paint first: machine polishing that removes swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation. Correct first, coat second, and the finish you seal is the finish you keep. Both steps are on our ceramic coating and paint correction page.
What a coating does not do
- It does not stop rock chips. It is a very thin layer on top of the clear coat. It has nothing in it to absorb an impact.
- It does not make paint scratch-proof. It helps with light wash marks. A key, a branch or a shopping cart still wins.
- It does not replace washing. It makes washing easier. The car still has to be washed.
Hail and dents: neither one helps
Northern Colorado gets hail, so here is the plain answer. Neither paint protection film nor a ceramic coating will stop a hail dent. A hailstone dents the metal. Film and coatings protect the paint surface. Neither one adds any strength to the panel under it. The same goes for door dings.
Worth knowing: if anyone sells you film or a coating as hail protection, that is a sales line. Dents are a metal problem, and they have a different fix.
That fix is the other half of what we do. Paintless dent repair works the metal back to its factory shape from behind the panel, with no filler and no repaint, so the original paint stays. It is the core of our work, and we are Master ARC and T-Form Certified in it. For hail damage, we need to see the vehicle in person to give an estimate.
If a panel has a dent and you want film on it, the order is simple: the dent comes out first, then the film goes on.
Rock chips: where the two really differ
The front of a vehicle in Northern Colorado takes a beating: gravel and sand on I-25, de-icing chemicals in winter, and whatever the truck ahead of you throws back. If rock chips are what you want to prevent, film is the answer and a coating is not.
On most daily drivers the hits land on the front bumper, the leading edge of the hood, the fenders and the mirror caps. That is why our film packages start with those panels and build up from there.
Sun is the other local factor. Loveland sits at about 5,000 feet, and UV is stronger at altitude. Both products help with UV: film on the panels it covers, a coating across everything it covers.
What each one costs
Paint protection film at KCL Creations is priced by how much of the vehicle you cover. These are our starting prices:
- Basic / Dealer: partial hood up to 18 inches, fender tips and mirror caps. Starts at $550.
- Front Bumper Only: the full painted front bumper. Starts at $700.
- Partial Front: bumper, partial hood up to 22 inches, partial fenders and mirror caps. Starts at $1,200.
- Full Front End: bumper, full hood and fenders, headlights, mirrors, pillars, door cups and edges. Starts at $2,400.
- Full Vehicle: the full painted exterior. Starts at $5,000.
Every price above is a starting price. Your quote is set for your exact vehicle, since size, body lines and bumper shape change how much film and labor a job needs.
Ceramic coating starts at $699 and adjusts from there with the size of the vehicle.
Paint correction is billed hourly, based on what your paint needs before it is coated. A single-stage correction for minor swirls takes less time than a multi-stage correction for deeper scratches, and the best way to estimate it is for us to see the vehicle in person.

When it makes sense to do both
Film and a coating are not competitors. They stack, and the order matters:
- Correct the paint where it needs it, so nothing gets sealed in.
- Film the panels that take the hits.
- Coat the whole vehicle, film included. A ceramic coating over the film also helps keep the film looking new.
We do this combination in our own shop. One of the installs on our paint protection film page is a BMW M2 with full film and a ceramic coating over it.
How to choose
- Mostly highway miles, and rock chips are what bother you: film on the front end first. Add a coating later if you want easier washing.
- Mostly around town, parked outside, and it looks dull and dirty too fast: paint correction and a ceramic coating.
- You plan to keep it a long time: both. Film where it gets hit, a coating over everything.
- You only plan to keep it a few years: a Front Bumper Only or Partial Front package covers the panels that chip first.
Common questions
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
They do different jobs, so neither is better across the board. Paint protection film is a physical barrier that stops rock chips and light scratches on the panels it covers. A ceramic coating is a thin bonded layer that resists UV and grime and makes the vehicle easier to wash. If rock chips are your concern, choose film. If keeping the car clean and glossy is your concern, choose a coating.
Does ceramic coating protect against rock chips?
No. A ceramic coating is a very thin layer bonded to the clear coat. It resists UV, road grime, brake dust, bug splatter and bird droppings, but it does not absorb the impact of a rock. Paint protection film is the product made for rock chips.
Will PPF or ceramic coating protect my car from hail?
No. Hail dents the metal panel, and neither film nor a coating adds strength to the metal. Both protect the paint surface only. Most hail dents are repaired with paintless dent repair, which works the metal back to shape and keeps the factory paint. Hail damage needs to be seen in person for an estimate.
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes. The film goes on first and the coating goes over it. A ceramic coating over the film helps keep the film clean and looking new, and the same coating can cover the rest of the painted surfaces.
How much does PPF cost compared to ceramic coating?
At KCL Creations in Loveland, paint protection film starts at $550 for the Basic / Dealer package, $700 for the front bumper, $1,200 for partial front, $2,400 for the full front end and $5,000 for full-vehicle coverage. Those are starting prices. Ceramic coating starts at $699 and adjusts with the size of the vehicle. Paint correction is billed hourly, based on what the paint needs, and the best way to estimate it is to see the vehicle in person.
