Is XPEL Worth It? An Honest Look at XPEL Paint Protection Film
Short answer: for most people who plan to keep their vehicle a few years and drive Northern Colorado roads, yes. For some people, no. XPEL is the paint protection film (PPF) we install in our Loveland shop, so we have a side in this. That is why this guide sticks to what XPEL publishes about its own film, what the warranty really covers, and the cases where we would tell you to keep your money.

What XPEL is
XPEL makes protective films for vehicles. Its best-known product is clear paint protection film, also called clear bra. It goes over the painted panels and takes the hits from gravel, sand and road debris so the paint does not.
XPEL's main clear film is ULTIMATE PLUS. We keep it in stock along with STEALTH, and we can install any XPEL film. The rest of the lineup:
- STEALTH: a satin-finish film that gives glossy paint a matte look. We stock it too.
- ULTIMATE FUSION: ULTIMATE PLUS with a hydrophobic topcoat, so the film is easier to clean.
- XPEL Color PPF: colored film that changes the look while it protects the paint. We install it too.
What you are paying for
A self-healing topcoat
In XPEL's words: “An advanced topcoat construction self-heals light scratches and swirl marks.” Think wash marks, a jacket zipper, a fingernail by the door handle. XPEL is also clear that deeper scratches that cut into the film may not fully heal.
Thickness and stain protection
ULTIMATE PLUS is 8 mil thick, and XPEL says it protects against scratches, chips and stains. Stain resistance is not a free pass, though. Bird droppings, bugs and road chemicals still need to come off soon, and stains are not a warranty item.
A 10-year warranty, in writing
This is the biggest difference from a cheap film. XPEL's limited warranty on ULTIMATE PLUS (and STEALTH) runs 10 years from the date of installation and covers yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating. It applies to film that was professionally installed the way XPEL recommends.
Read the fine print on any film, including ours. XPEL's warranty does not cover:
- Stains and scratches
- Water spots from minerals left to dry on the film
- Damage from outside forces, including the impact of rocks and road debris
- Damage from ceramic coatings that are not XPEL brand
- Areas that were not re-wrapped after a paint or body repair
That rock line surprises people, but it makes sense: when a rock tears the film, the film took the hit so your paint did not. Replacing that piece is a repair, not a defect.
Claims go through the installer who did the work, with proof such as the warranty card or original receipt. The warranty can transfer to a new owner for the time left, with proof of the original installation date. Keep your paperwork.
What it costs, and why cheaper film costs less
At KCL Creations, film is priced by how much of the vehicle you cover. Our packages start at $550 for Basic / Dealer, $700 for Front Bumper Only, $1,200 for Partial Front, $2,400 for Full Front End and $5,000 for Full Vehicle. Those are starting prices. Your quote is set for your exact vehicle, and what each package covers is on our paint protection film page.
Cheaper film can cost less up front. The savings come from the film itself: some budget films have no self-healing topcoat, and warranties vary a lot, from several years to nothing in writing. The labor does not get cheaper. Prep, fitting and wrapping edges take the same time whatever film is used.
That is the math that matters. If a budget film yellows or peels in a few years, you pay for removal and a second install. Paying for labor twice usually costs more than buying better film once.
When XPEL is worth it
- You plan to keep the vehicle three years or more. The longer you own it, the more of that 10-year warranty you use.
- The paint is new or close to it. Film protects the paint you have. Factory paint with no chips is the best thing to protect.
- You drive I-25 or gravel roads. The front bumper, hood edge, fenders and mirrors take the hits. That is where film pays for itself.
- You care what the car looks like at trade-in. A clean front end helps at resale. A chipped hood does not.
When it might not be
- A lease that ends soon, or a car you are selling soon. If you will only drive it a year or two, a Front Bumper Only or Basic / Dealer package covers the panels that chip first. Or skip film entirely.
- Paint that is already chipped or faded. Film does not fix chips. It seals in whatever is under it. Paint correction first, or put the money toward something else.
- Repainted panels. Film comes off factory paint cleanly with the right equipment. A repainted panel can lose paint when the film is taken off later.
- You want hail protection. No film does that. More below.
The install matters as much as the film
Great film installed badly is still a bad job. Lifted edges, dust under the film and knife cuts on the paint come from the install, not the brand. Look for:
- A clean indoor space. Dust and cold work against a good install. We install inside our Loveland shop, year round. Booking in winter? Read Is It Too Cold for Paint Protection Film Installation?
- Computer-cut patterns, finished by hand. Every piece of film we install is computer-cut for your vehicle and installed by hand.
- Someone trained on the film. At KCL, the work is led by Koby, our XPEL Certified and Trained Installer.
- A shop that will still be here. XPEL's warranty claims go through the installer who did the job. Pick one you can find again.
Does PPF stop hail?
No. Paint protection film will not stop a hail dent. Hail dents the metal, and film adds no strength to the panel under it. Same for door dings.
Worth knowing: if anyone sells you film as hail protection, that is a sales line. Dents are a metal problem, and they have a different fix.
That fix is paintless dent repair, which works the metal back to shape from behind the panel and keeps the original paint. If a panel has a dent and you want film on it, the dent comes out first. For hail damage, we need to see the vehicle in person to give an estimate.
The Colorado factor
Northern Colorado is hard on paint:
- I-25 and gravel. Sand, gravel and whatever the truck ahead throws back hit the front end at highway speed. Commuting from Fort Collins? See paint protection film for Fort Collins drivers.
- Chip-sealed county roads. Loose chips on fresh chip seal are rock chips waiting to happen.
- Winter road chemicals. Magnesium chloride and other de-icers end up on the film. Rinse them off; left on, they shorten its life.
- Sun at altitude. Loveland sits at about 5,000 feet, and UV is stronger up here. Film covers the paint on the panels it covers.

What about ceramic coating?
Film and ceramic coating do different jobs. Film stops rock chips. A coating keeps paint glossy and easier to clean. They stack well, and a coating over film helps keep the film looking new. One detail from the warranty above: damage from a non-XPEL ceramic coating is not covered, so if you want film and a coating, ask about XPEL FUSION PLUS. Our ceramic coating starts at $699 and adjusts with the size of the vehicle. For the full comparison, read PPF vs Ceramic Coating: Which Does Your Car Need?
Common questions
Is XPEL paint protection film worth the money?
For most people who keep a vehicle three years or more and drive highway or gravel miles, yes. You get a self-healing topcoat and a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating. If you are selling soon, or the paint is already chipped, a smaller package or no film may make more sense.
How long does XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS last?
XPEL's limited warranty runs 10 years from installation. Care decides whether the film gets there: keep it clean, rinse off winter road chemicals, and keep a pressure washer at least 36 inches away.
What does the XPEL warranty not cover?
Stains, scratches, water spots, rock and road debris damage, damage from non-XPEL ceramic coatings, and areas not re-wrapped after a paint or body repair. Claims go through the installer who did the work.
Will XPEL paint protection film protect my car from hail?
No. Hail dents the metal, and film adds no strength to the panel. Hail dents are repaired with paintless dent repair, and hail damage needs to be seen in person for an estimate.
